Three local law enforcement officers will attend the 27th annual “Preventing Crime in the Black Community” conference in Tampa this month on a grant provided by Crime Stoppers of Marion County.
The three are Det. Gregory Spates of the Marion County Sheriff’s office, officer Cynthia Barnes of the Ocala Police department and Lt. Sue Webb of the Dunnellon Police Department.
The conference, a collaborative effort of attorney-general Pam Bondi and Florida law enforcement agencies, is geared at sharing innovative ideas and crime prevention strategies in the Black community. Ms. Bondi said that a major part of the program will be directed toward stemming violence among young people.
Leo Smith, local Crime Stoppers board president, added that the conference is a vital resource for local law enforcement in the Black community. Smith said, “We’re paying the expenses for these law enforcement people to attend this important conference as our way of giving back to the community.”
The conference is May 16-18 at the Tampa Marriott.
